The Best Order to Study Your ATPL Theory Courses

One of the most common questions we get is: “What’s the best order to study the ATPL theory courses?”

The good news is—there is a recommended sequence. For nearly 15 years, we’ve guided students through their ATPL subjects with this study order. It helps you build confidence with some early “wins,” then carry that momentum into the heavier courses, before finishing strong with Law.

That said, every student is different, so treat this as a proven guide, not a strict rulebook.

Key Timelines to Remember

Before looking at the study order, it’s important to understand the regulatory timelines around your ATPL exams:

  • 3 years – Once you pass your first ATPL subject, you have 3 years to pass all the remaining ATPL subjects to gain your ATPL written examination credit.
  • 10 years – That ATPL written examination credit is valid for 10 years.
  • 5 years (Law only) – ATPL Law has a 5-year validity. If you don’t acquire your ATPL licence within that time, you’ll need to resit ATPL Law to extend your written examination credit for another five years.

Plan carefully—these timelines shape the order you should tackle the courses.

Recommended ATPL Course Study Order

1. ATPL Meteorology

If you’re current with CPL Meteorology, this is the best place to start. The syllabus is closely aligned, which makes the transition smooth.

➡️ Not current with CPL Met? Start with ATPL Human Factors, then return to Meteorology next.

2. ATPL Human Factors

This is a large syllabus, but not a particularly difficult one. Like Meteorology, it overlaps with the CPL Human Factors course. Most students score in the high 90s here—making it a great way to notch up an early success and build momentum.

3. ATPL Navigation Aids

At this point, the ATPL syllabus begins to move away from CPL-level material. Navigation Aids is a large and interesting course, but it’s very achievable. Completing it sharpens your skills before moving on to the most demanding subjects.

4. ATPL Navigation

Often ranked among the top two hardest ATPL subjects. The reality? Navigation isn’t especially tricky—it just requires time and persistence to understand the concepts fully. Tackling it at this stage ensures you’ve got momentum and confidence to push through.

5. ATPL Flight Planning

The other “big one.” With Navigation under your belt, you can now focus your energy here. This subject demands careful attention to detail—you need to truly understand the material inside and out to score well.

⚠️ Important: We strongly recommend you do not study Flight Planning alongside another course (including ATPL Navigation). Success here comes from undivided focus.

6. ATPL Advanced Aerodynamics & Aircraft Systems

By now, you’re on the home stretch. This course is based around the Boeing 777, which makes it both fascinating and very different from the other subjects. The syllabus is large, so take your time. We also don’t recommend pairing this with another course.

7. ATPL Law  (always last)

ATPL Law should be your final subject. While the syllabus is large, it’s not overly difficult—making it a fitting way to finish your ATPL theory courses.

Remember: ATPL Law only has a five-year validity, so completing it last gives you the best chance of avoiding a resit later on.

Final Thoughts

Studying for your ATPL isn’t just about getting through the material—it’s about planning smart. By following this recommended order, you’ll:

  • Build momentum with achievable early wins.
  • Focus properly on the two hardest subjects (ATPL Navigation and Flight Planning).
  • Manage your regulatory time limits effectively.
  • Finish with Law at the right time.

Everyone’s journey is different, but this sequence has helped students succeed for nearly 15 years. Use it as a guide, adapt it to your situation, and set yourself up for a smooth run through your ATPL theory courses.
