The Seven Clear Functions of the Mind: A Pilot’s Guide to Safe Flying

As pilots, we rely on our mental abilities to navigate through the challenges that come with each flight.

The Seven Clear Functions of the Mind are an effective tool that helps us maintain focus and make informed decisions. Each function plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of our passengers and crew.

Choice

Pilots have to make numerous decisions that impact the safety of the flight. The decision to take off, how to navigate around storms, and how to respond to mechanical issues all require sound judgment. Pilots must weigh the risks and benefits of each decision and make the choice that ensures the safety of everyone on board.

Refusal

Distractions can be dangerous in the cockpit. To resist temptation and avoid distractions, pilots must be disciplined and follow standard operating procedures. Resisting the temptation to take shortcuts or push beyond safe limits is essential to ensuring a successful flight.

Yearning

A desire to learn and improve drives pilots to become better. Taking additional training courses, attending seminars and workshops, reading books and practicing regularly helps pilots stay sharp and maintain their skills.

Repulsion

Distractions and negativity can impair pilots’ judgment and affect their ability to fly safely. Pilots must remain focused on the task at hand and filter out distractions and negative thoughts. Doing so helps pilots maintain their situational awareness, react quickly to any unexpected developments, and make sound decisions.

Preparation

Preparing for the unexpected is essential to ensuring the safety of everyone on board. Pilots must review emergency procedures and plan for contingencies such as engine failure, severe weather, or unexpected air traffic delays. Preparation enables pilots to act quickly and decisively when facing unexpected challenges.

Purpose

Transporting our payload (perhaps our passengers, patients or freight) safely to their destination is a pilot’s primary purpose. This responsibility motivates pilots to perform their job to the best of their ability every time they take off. Pilots take pride in their work and understand the importance of their role in ensuring the safety of everyone on board.

Assent

Pilots must understand that some things are beyond their control. Adapting to uncontrollable factors such as weather, air traffic, or mechanical issues is essential to ensuring a successful flight. Accepting these factors and working with them rather than against them allows pilots to make informed decisions that prioritise the safety of everyone on board.

The Seven Clear Functions of the Mind provide pilots with a valuable framework to ensure the safety of their passengers and crew.

By making sound choices, resisting temptation, striving for improvement, blocking out negativity, preparing for the unexpected, prioritising their purpose, and accepting uncontrollable factors, pilots can maintain focus, think critically, and make informed decisions quickly.

A clear and focused mind is critical to a successful flight, and these functions enable pilots to operate at their best, ensuring that every flight is safe and successful.

Have a great week. Stay safe.
